OpenAI will withdraw ChatGPT Atlas less than ten months after presenting it as his alternative to Chrome. The browser will stop working next August 9 and the company recommends its users export their bookmarks to another browser, for which it offers specific instructions for Google’s browser.
Atlas was launched on October 21, 2025 like a browser for macOS built around ChatGPT. Instead of adding a simple chatbot to have at hand, it allowed artificial intelligence to understand the content of open pages and use the navigation context without forcing the user to copy texts or constantly switch applications.
Its most ambitious function was agent mode. ChatGPT could open tabs, press buttons, and complete tasks such as researching a topic, comparing information, filling out forms, planning a trip, or booking an appointment. Atlas also incorporated a optional smart history which allowed previously visited pages to be recovered and related to other user conversations.
The browser appeared in the middle of the race to turn the web into an environment managed by AI agents. Perplexity had launched Comet, The Browser Company had opened Day to users of Mac and Opera made available to the public Opera Neon in December. Google took a similar step in January 2026 with Auto Browsea function of Gemini for Chrome capable of browsing multiple pages, filling out forms, and performing multi-step tasks.
OpenAI does not abandon these capabilities, but the standalone browser. The company will transfer them to the ChatGPT desktop app and an updated Chrome extension. The change is part of ChatGPT Worka new ChatGPT mode, available in the app, aimed at complex professional tasks that brings together web browsing, files, connected applications and functions from Codex.
ChatGPT Work can research and analyze information, use Internet tools, modify files and create documents, spreadsheets, presentations or finished web pages. You can also operate the computer to tap, write, or move files between applications, while the user monitors the process and authorizes sensitive actions.. In practice, it turns the ChatGPT application into the place OpenAI wants it to be. concentrate functions that were previously distributed among several products.
The move fits with information published in March by The Wall Street Journal. The media announced that OpenAI planned unite ChatGPT app, Codex programming platform and Atlas into one desktop ‘super app’ to simplify the experience, concentrate resources and strengthen its offer for companies and professionals. ChatGPT Work seems to materialize a good part of that project.
OpenAI’s James Sun has acknowledged the influence of browser users on new products. ‘All of these capabilities were developed from what we learned from Atlas users who gave a vote of confidence to a new browser. You taught us how agents can improve browsing and working on the open web, and we are applying these learnings to these new products.’
Atlas is not the first recent application that OpenAI decides to sacrifice to reduce its ‘side quests’. The company closed the application and the web version of sorayour social video generation platform. Your API and models Sora 2 They are also scheduled to retire in September.
