Due to a international order increasingly unstable and turbulent, various governments have decided to implement a military service to prepare their young people to face episodes of serious crises or war conflicts. Spain has decided to join this trend, launching a call in which young volunteers born between 2007 and 2008 may appear as reservists within the professional Army.
The government intends for this measure to come into force this year 2026, following the procedures of the Royal Decree 170/2026of March 4, published in the Official State Gazette. All this with the objective of increasing the capacity of the Spanish Armed Forces and be prepared for any possible scenario. However, this fact does not imply the implementation of compulsory military servicewhich was eliminated in 2001.
This new service will be optional for all those young people born in 2007 and 2008who reach the age of majority. All with the objective of increasing the number of reservists and improving the social support of the Spanish Army. Likewise, both men and women may apply, following the provisions of article 30 of the Spanish Constitution, which ensures that all Spanish citizens “They have the right and the duty to defend Spain“.
The main requirements to apply for a place in military service
All those young people who want to register for the new voluntary military service offered by the Spanish Armed Forces and who will start this year 2026 They must comply with a series of requirements. To be eligible for one of the positions announced, candidates must:
- Have the Spanish nationality.
- Have 18 years compliments.
- Have no priors penalties.
- Have a good history of citizen conduct.
- Not be deprived of civil rights.
- Overcome the psychophysical conditions specific for each call.
Furthermore, it will also take into account the academic training of each of the applicants. Those who have university studies may qualify for ensign, while those who have Professional or Intermediate Training may advance to the rank of sergeant. Candidates without academic qualifications may enter as a soldier or sailor.
During the training process, reservists will receive financial compensation
During the training tests, those selected will have lessons on the organization of the Armed Forces, discipline and regulations, action protocolsessential physical preparation and basic instruction. All this in variable periods not exceeding 30 dayswhich will make it compatible with the private lives of the volunteers.
Once passed, the reservists will have a cinitial three-year commitment in which they will receive training according to the factions in which they have been assigned, including knowledge technical, logistical or administrative. Likewise, all reservists will receive financial compensation during the process. The amount of this compensation will depend on the length of service and the job to which you have been assigned.
