Safety Tips
Follow these tips to make your Adopt-a-Highway work safe.
Do's:
- Car pool to the pickup site to reduce the number of vehicles at the roadside. Park as
far from the pavement edge as possible.
- Wear light-colored protective clothing as well as work gloves and sturdy shoes.
- Work only in daylight and fair weather.
- Be alert for snakes, harmful weeds and dangerous substances - avoid them if at all
possible.
- Post safety signs to let motorists know you are working.
- Consider yourself a good citizen and an asset to your community.
Don'ts:
- Work on a highway or close to a highway's edge or any median strip.
- Bring small children.
- Pick up litter at construction sites, in tunnels or on bridges and overpasses.
- Deal with material that appears hazardous.
- Work in peak travel times.
- Distract drivers.
- Engage in horseplay that keeps you from seeing and hearing oncoming traffic.
